Networking 101: Turning Awkward into Opportunity (Basic)
You know the saying about getting ahead: “It’s not what you know…” But when you’re invited to a networking event, do you delight, or do you cringe? Love it or hate it, networking is crucial to your success. At networking events like ASHRAE, you’ll meet like-minded individuals and make important business connections; they may even net you a much-needed job or contract. In this session, you’ll learn practical tips for connecting in conversation and what to avoid. Then, put the skills to the test with a quick round of speed networking.
Time Management for the Perpetually Busy Engineer (Basic)
If you have a never-ending to-do list, an inbox that’s never empty, or a calendar that’s jammed with meetings…this session is for you. Most of us don’t prioritize our time well, and as a result we confuse urgent priorities with unimportant reminders or basic tasks. This can lead to procrastination on the most important work we have on our plate. In this session, we’ll talk about various methods to manage your inbox, keep your to-do list organized, and be more productive.
Energy Recovery…for People! Managing stress at work (Basic)
Balance, resilience, peace, and calm. If it sounds like a bunch of woo-woo, fluffy talk… check with your doctor. Our workforce is plagued by rising blood pressure, anxiety attacks, and a lack of vacation time. For a lot of people, the pursuit of a healthy balance seems like an impossible goal. Just the mention of work pressures…getting construction documents out the door, bid deadlines, and unhappy building owners…can cause the heart to skip a beat. When stress levels rise, productivity plummets. Stress can zap our concentration, make us irritable or depressed, and harm our personal and professional relationships. This presentation will cover practical methods for restoring energy and balance in your life, so you can be your best at work and at home.
Volunteer Leadership: Tips for Success (Basic)
Volunteer leadership is both rewarding and challenging. Do it right and you’ll build relationships, win awards, and leave a legacy. There’s plenty of work to go around: how do you bring it all together (without losing your mind, or your job)? This presentation complements traditional society training with practical advice from someone who has been there before. The presentation can be tailored to be more specific to incoming presidents or expanded to encompass the entire chapter leadership team. This presentation can also be extended to include a facilitated goal-building workshop.
How Standards are Made, and other ASHRAE “Secrets” (Basic)
Have you ever wondered how a standard is made, or who the people are behind all those “shalls” and “exceptions”? Who writes the ASHRAE Handbooks? How does one get an article into the ASHRAE Journal or present at a Conference? In this presentation, we’ll cover the methods behind the madness, and share how any ASHRAE member can get more involved in Society-level activities.
Foundations for Success in HVAC (Basic)
A presentation suitable for student members or those early in their career, this casual presentation will cover the transition from education to successful career. The speaker will discuss a variety of early-career milestones. The audience will hear the trials of a young engineer, like deciding whether to pursue a P.E. license, whether to relocate for a career move, and having to choose between compensation and happiness. And: what happens when life…happens? Pam will share her lessons learned and advice for the audience in a similar life stage. This presentation will also cover how ASHRAE plays a key role in career development.

Take it from a Millennial: Generation Differences in the Workforce (Basic)
Generational differences in the workplace go far beyond the occasional pop culture references. Employees from different generations have different expectations of the workplace. This presentation will cover how generation differences impact the manager/employee relationship as well as team dynamics. The presentation will also cover what employers can do to recruit, retain, and mentor millennials to become their next leaders. Other tough questions will discussed, such as how to balance tried and true strategies while not stifling new ideas.
Building Inclusivity (Basic)
An inclusive environment has many benefits, such as a happier workforce, growing the number of job opportunities, and yes: increasing the bottom line. Building inclusivity starts with you, whatever role you play: the coworker, the manager, the employee, the owner, the friend, or the business partner. In this session you’ll be asked to challenge your implicit bias. The session will focus on the gender gap in our industry and will include results from a survey of ASHRAE members. The presenter will also provide anecdotes from her own career that put the discussion into perspective.
Variable Refrigerant Flow: System Overview (Basic)
This presentation covers the very basics of VRF – What is it? Why use it? When to use it? And maybe most importantly, when NOT to use it. The presentation will hit key highlights from VRF Chapter of the ASHRAE Handbook. In addition, this presentation covers the most important design considerations for VRF systems.
VRF Applied: Lessons Learned (Intermediate)
For the audience familiar with VRF systems, this presentation covers some best practices and lessons learned from real-life applications.
VRF and DOAS: Design Considerations (Intermediate)
A combined VRF and DOAS building system offers many advantages, such as energy efficiency, enhanced occupant comfort, and reduced mechanical system space requirements. To realize these benefits and meet the requirements of the space (sensible temperature, humidity ratio, and ventilation requirements), the designer must pay close attention to system design and application. This presentation will cover basic system design concepts for a VRF + DOAS system, advantages and disadvantages of various system designs, and key considerations for meeting code and space requirements.
